Kudos to the Horizons K-Kids!

The Horizons Elementary K-Kids Club has been busy this school year! This community service and leadership club has made a significant impact at Horizons and throughout our local community. Students kicked off the year with an anti-bullying campaign, organized multiple donation events (from food to school supplies to dog toys!), created thoughtful, handmade items to share in the community, cleaned up their school campus, and more! The 25 fourth- and fifth-grade club members also build leadership skills while doing their good work. They plan and lead their own meetings in addition to choosing their club service projects.

The club recently ended the year’s activities with a celebration picnic at Wonderwood Park, where the K-Kids received certificates and Key lanyards in recognition of their community service. A special shout-out to Horizons advisors Jane Stillman and Tamara Robins and Kiwanis advisor Karen Schoessel for their support of this fantastic club!

K-Kids 2021-22 projects include:

  • Creating anti-bullying bulletin board messages that have remained in view all school year.
  • Collecting and organizing school supplies to donate to a school destroyed by fire in eastern Washington.
  • Leading a school-wide project to make “Hearts for Heroes,” handwritten messages on cut-out hearts that were delivered to local first responders, military personnel and veterans, medical providers, and other local heroes.
  • Making and delivering dog toys to three local animal shelters. Students collected tee shirts and material scraps to weave into dog toys!
  • Making fun and artistic placemats for Meals on Wheels staff to share with their food deliveries.
  • Creating colorful bookmarks that were donated to community and school libraries.
  • Organizing the annual Drive-Through-Food-A-Thon, a one-day event where community members dropped off food for a local food bank. K-Kids greeted donors and sorted and packed the food donations.
  • Creating Valentines for Vets as part of a community-wide initiative. Students made beautiful valentines with personal messages that were delivered to local veterans.
  • Cleaning up the Horizons campus, collecting multiple bags of trash from school grounds.
  • Volunteering at the South Sound Reading Foundation to clean and label donated books that will be distributed throughout the community and to NTPS Little Free Libraries.
