8/19/21: Family Message on Staff Vaccinations

Dear NTPS Families,

As we prepare for students to come back to in-person learning 5 days a week, we wanted to let you know about a new legal requirement for K-12 school employees in Washington state.

On August 18, 2021, Governor Jay Inslee announced a new directive legally requiring all K–12 school district employees and volunteers to get a COVID-19 vaccination or a medical or religious exemption by mid-October.

North Thurston Public Schools and our Board of Directors do not have local control over this matter. We are legally required to follow the Governor’s directive.

  • This proclamation does not apply to students. The COVID-19 vaccine is not required for students.
  • The proclamation also does not change any mask guidance in school settings -- all staff, students, and volunteers are required to wear masks or face coverings in schools and on school buses.

Please note that this announcement will not delay our return to school buildings this fall. Our first day of school schedule will continue to be as follows:

  • Secondary (Middle/High Schools): Wednesday, Sept. 8
  • Elementary (Grades 1-5): Friday, Sept. 10 (Note: Schools will contact families the last week of August regarding signups for Family Connections conferences held Sept. 8-9)
  • Kindergarten: Monday, Sept. 13
  • Preschool: Thursday, Sept. 16

We are sharing this information to help families understand some of the health and safety requirements in place for the 2021–22 school year.
