Virtual Orchestra Mentorship began in the fall of 2020 as a way to foster community between Orchestra students in the elementary and secondary grades during remote learning in NTPS. Middle and high school student volunteers spend every Friday afternoon helping 5th graders from around the district learn their new instruments in virtual small groups. Capri Crosby (pictured left), a 5th grade mentee from Lakes Elementary, says "the volunteer sessions made me feel more connected with the person who was helping me learn. I noticed more growth in my playing."

Student mentors help the younger musicians with technique, songs, and extra practice, while gaining valuable experience in teaching and mentoring that will serve them well into their future. "All of the kids participate rather well and catch on very easily. I really enjoy mentoring the students and always look forward to Fridays!" says Andrew Black (pictured below), an 11th grade mentor from North Thurston HS.

The mentorship program is organized and supervised by Ninee Wolff along with other Orchestra teachers from around the district.
