Anew school-wide program at Lakes: PBIS-Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
Positive Behavioral Interventions andSupports (PBIS) is an approach to teaching and supporting positive behaviorsand meeting the needs of ALL students. It is being used throughout North ThurstonSchool District in elementary, middle, and high school. This school-wide approach to teaching behaviorfocuses on building a safe and positive environment in which all students canlearn. The foundation of PBIS at Lakes is the three school-wide expectations:
· Be Respectful
· Be Responsible
· Be Safe
In the first month of school, your childlearned the three behavioral expectations. Throughout the year, teachers will help students learn what theexpectations “look” and “sound” like in every setting during the school day. These lessons will be re-taught and reinforced as a regular part of ourinstructional program, along with classroom lessons on problem solving (Kelso’sChoices) and bullying prevention.
To be successful, our behavior programneeds to be a partnership between home and school. Throughout the school yearthe PBIS team will send updates and information about PBIS. We invite yourcomments, concerns and ideas to make PBIS work at our school.
Please support PBIS at Lakes by:
· Reviewingbehavior expectations with your child
· Usingthe three expectations at home
· Providingpositive reinforcement (rewarding good choices with compliments or quality timeat home)
· Sharingcomments or suggestions with your child’s teacher and Lakes staff
We have already seen good results as weare implementing these interventions on a school-wide
level. Together, we can all work to make sure school is a positive and safe placeto learn.
