The A, B, C's of Applying to be a Substitute

  • Thank you for your interest in substitute employment with North Thurston Public Schools. Our substitutes have the unique opportunity to become better acquainted with our District and each school location. As well as the different employment opportunities that North Thurston Public Schools has to offer. Many of our substitutes are hired for permanent employment because staff, principals and supervisors get to know their skills and abilities on a first-hand basis.

    Step A:

Submit the appropriate online substitute application for the area in which you are interested in substituting. Once you are eligible as an applicant for substitute employment you must print, fill out and submit the application forms to SubService.  The forms are available under the "Forms and Downloads" tab. The next step is to bring your substitute packet to Human Resources for processing.

    Step B:

When all of the required documents are completed and returned to SubService (and you are eligible to substitute with NTPS) you will be required to provide evidence that a WSP/FBI Fingerprint background check has been initiated and/or completed within the last two years.  We accept a copy of the receipt provided by the ESD 113 as evidence the process has been initiated. If you are applying to substitute as a cook helper, bus driver or custodian, please contact us at (360) 412-4490 before fingerprinting.

Next you must provide evidence the fingerprint process has been initiated, you will then be provided access information enabling you to complete a mandatory online SafeSchools Training Course. We will email you the instructions on how to access this training once we have reviewed your application material and your background check has been initiated.

    Step C:

Substitute Services utilizes Frontline Education's system called Absence Management, an automated substitute employee placement system to expedite the scheduling of substitutes. Upon completion of the process as outline above, you will be provided the registration information necessary to access Absence Management. Every attempt will be made to assign substitutes according to the substitutes' expressed area of interest and preferences. Please go to the "Job Descriptions and Rates of Pay" tab to review our compensation rates. For additional information please contact us as at (360) 412-4490.

    • Absence Management is an automated absence reporting and substitute placement system that is accessible 24 hours a day. It serves approximately 1,700 classified and certificated employees and 500 substitutes.
