About Our Athletics Program

  • Nisqually Middle School 7th & 8th Athletics Program

North Thurston Public School District provides middle school athletic activities for eligible students. A fee is assessed to cover some of the costs, which are not reimbursed by state funds. An athletic fee, which is required for sport participation, helps offset costs of coaches, transportation to and from athletic contests, repair and reconditioning of safety equipment, and official fees.
Students are required to pay the established fee at the time of registering for participation in a Nisqually Middle School athletic activity. Students completed sports packets, including current sports physical, must on file prior to the first day of practice. Late paperwork cannot be accepted.

    Participation Guidelines & Eligibility

All NMS student athletes are just that, students first athletes second.  We have educational guidelines that must be adhered to. Athletes will be expected to be passing all classes academically and be on an appropriate honor level at all times. Athletes failing one class will be put on probation and allowed to practice if their grade point is 2.0 or better. Athletes will have until the next grade check to show improvements and reach minimum requirements. If minimum requirements are not reached, the athlete will be released from the team.
Athletes failing two or more classes will be put on probation and will not be allowed to practice until minimum requirements are reached by the next grade check. If minimum requirements are not met, the athlete is released from the team.
Behavior is checked every week. If an athlete is on Honor level 3, he or she will be placed on probation. The athlete can practice but can not participate in games. If an athlete is on HL 4, he or she will not be allowed to practice or play games until he or she goes back to HL 2. This can take up to 2 weeks.  If a student is suspended out of school, or assigned to in-school suspension, he or she may be removed from the team or at a minimum will not be allowed to participate at that time.
Athletes are expected to follow directions and be productive. Sportsmanship will be demonstrated at all times by athletes, coaches, and parents. Athletes are expected to be at all practices on time. If an athlete has 2 unexcused absences, he or she will be released from the team. Please send a note with them after an absence, so the coach can mark it as excused.

Practices are everyday after school during the sport season. Practices last until 5:30 for the first ten practices and after that time, Friday only practices will end at 5:00. Parents and siblings are not allowed to stay and watch practices. There is a safety issue involved and it can be very distracting to the players.
Please feel free to introduce yourself to your athlete’s coach once practice has ended and they have free time.
Please make sure you pick up your child at 5:30 each night. (see above note about Friday practices) If you are late more than once, the coach may release your child from the team. Coaches have responsibilities after practices. Please respect their time.
A game schedule will be sent home with your athlete once teams have been selected. A copy of the game schedule can also be found on our website here.

Jerseys will be issued to athletes prior to the first game. Sometimes practice jersey’s are also issued. A jersey is assigned to each students to be use for all sports that students participate in.  Athletes are expected to maintain this jersey for both years here at Nisqually Middle School.  There is a $10 replacement fee for any jersey that needs to be replaced. Athletes need to have their own shorts, all black or all blue will work for games.  If sports equipment and gear is issued, it must be returned at the end of the season or the student will be placed on the fines list.

    Appropriate Attire

Please make sure that athletes have proper equipment with them each and every day for practice and games. Tank tops should not be worn and all school dress codes still apply.

    Away Games

All athletes are to ride with their team on the bus to and from their destination. If a parent or legal guardian wants to take an athlete home after the game, they MUST sign their athlete out with the coach in order to leave with them. Any parent taking home someone else’s child from a game can only do so if the coach has a signed note from the athletes parent PRIOR to the beginning of the game. A child not signed out properly, will be held accountable, they may not be able to compete in the next away game or may even be released from the team. There is no worse feeling for a coach than not knowing where one of their athletes are. Coaches are responsible for all athletes at all times. For home games, it is not necessary for an athlete to be signed out after a game.
Please Note: Outstanding fees/fines prevents student from participating in extra curricular activities.  Please contact Students Services if we can be of assistance or if you have any questions. (360) 412-4770.
