Transferring a student to another school

  • Each student in NTPS is required to attend school based upon the boundary in which they reside.

If a student wishes to attend a school outside their resident boundary (inside or outside of the North Thurston Public Schools boundaries), they must follow the transfer process. Forms must be submitted by a parent or guardian. Per NTPS Policy 3131 and 3141.

The transfer request must be submitted annually if the student wishes to continue to attend a school other than their resident school.

In order to ensure space for resident students, the district will restrict or limit transfers at some schools.

Students will not be registered at the requested school until the transfer process is completed and the parents & school have been notified.

Students who are approved to transfer into NTPS or within NTPS are NOT permitted to ride district transportation.

    * If your family has relocated and your new address assigns your students to a new school:
    • If you wish to request they continue at their current school, please follow the transfer process described below.
    • If you want your students to attend the new resident school assigned to your new address, please take proof of your new address into the NEW school. Follow the link below to see what is accepted as proof, fill out the form and bring it and the proof documentation to the new resident school.

Inter-District Transfers **NEW PROCESS**

  • What do I do if I want my student(s) to attend a school (including virtual learning) outside of the North Thurston Public Schools?

    • To attend school in a non-resident district, the resident district must first release the student to start the transfer process. Whether you are wishing to attend another school in another district, some other path to high school completion, or seeking a renewal for a previously granted release, please complete a request through the Choice Transfer Request via the Washington State Choice Transfer Request Portal (CTRP). When you have completed your application through the CTRP, your request will be sent to NTPS Student Records for review.

Before a non-resident student can apply to attend a school in the North Thurston Public Schools District, a Release of Attendance (via OSPI Choice Transfer Request Portal) must be granted by the district of residence. Permission must be granted annually by the district of residence.

    1. Complete the OSPI Choice Transfer Request Portal(Release of Attendance)
    2. Once a release has been obtained, complete the Non-Resident Application Form, and return it to NTPS Student Records. Your request is not considered received until both Steps 1 and 2 have been completed.

Please Note: You can obtain the release for the 2022-2023 school year at any time, but NTPS does not accept the Application for Non-Resident Admission until Monday, March 07, 2022, for 1st -12th grade and Monday, August 01, 2022, for Kindergarten.

    Submit Your Non-Resident Application Form:
