Dual Language Spanish/English Immersion at Mountain View Elementary

Through a classroom made up of half native English speakers and half native Spanish speakers, with lessons taught in both languages, young learners can develop skills in two languages to serve them throughout their lives.
Who is eligible?
Students are eligible if they are entering kindergarten and live in the Mountain View Elementary area and up to 3rd grade if they are in the Lydia Hawk Elementary area (with some spots available for other NTPS students). Students must commit to staying in the program through 5th grade.
How does the program work?
Classes are around 24 students, with a goal of 50% students who speak primarily English at home and 50% students who speak primarily Spanish at home. Teachers provide instruction in both Spanish and English.
Children are born with the capacity to learn languages! The dual language program teacher will help students learn in both languages through techniques such as pictures, props, facial expressions, gestures, and physical movements.
The curriculum follows district guidelines and standards and will cover the same grade-level objectives as general education classrooms.
How can my family apply?
To be considered for the Dual Language Program at either Lydia Hawk or Mountain View, you must:

- Submit a Dual Language Program application by 3:30 pm on May 31, 2023.
Families will be notified within two weeks about whether their child will be enrolled in the program. Due to limited space, submitting an application does not guarantee a spot in the program. If the number of applications is more than the capacity, NTPS will maintain a waitlist, contacting families in placement order when classroom spots open.

What is Dual Language Immersion?

Would all grades participate immediately?
No. We start a school program with two classes in kindergarten and then, the following year, add two classes in first grade and continue adding a new grade level each year.
Currently, Lydia Hawk Elementary is starting 3rd-grade classes, and Mountain View Elementary is beginning its program with Kindergarten.

How does the program work?
Students will receive 50% of their instruction in English and 50% in Spanish. They will learn to read, write, and speak in both languages.

Will participating students have two teachers?
At Lydia Hawk, classes have multiple teachers, one that teaches in only Spanish and one that teaches in only English. At Mountain View, there will be one teacher that teaches in both Spanish & English.

How will my English-speaking child understand the Spanish teacher?
Children are born with the capacity to learn a language. Teachers help children learn language primarily by talking with them and using techniques to support active learning. Teachers use many strategies to make the content understandable, such as visuals, props, manipulatives, facial expressions, gestures, physical movements, and many other instructional techniques.

What if my child does not speak English or Spanish?
The program is designed to support students regardless of their native language, whether it is English, Spanish, or any other language. Instruction is given in English and Spanish and supports students as they develop both.

How can I help my child with their homework if I don't speak the language or understand the assignment?
The purpose of homework is to provide students with extra practice with a concept or skill they have already learned in class. Students should be able to do this practice independently, regardless of the language. You can ask your child to explain the homework and describe what they are doing in your family’s home language.

Will a second language interfere with my child’s English ability?
In most cases, learning another language enhances a child’s English ability. Children can learn much about English by learning the structure of another language.

Will my child fall behind if he/she learns two languages?
Many language concepts transfer from one language to another.

Will my child learn the same things as students in the regular classes?
Yes, the Dual Language classes cover the same grade level objectives as regular general education classes. Students work toward the same academic goals, regardless of the language of instruction.

Will my child become proficient in the second language? How long will that take?
Generally, it takes students 4–10 years to achieve cognitive academic language proficiency in a second language. The time it takes to learn a language is influenced by many factors, including students’ personality and motivation, teacher expectations, parental support, program leadership, and support at both the school and district level. Student success requires active involvement in all of these areas. Achieving high levels of oral and written proficiency in a second language is a long-term process. A long-term commitment is essential.
