Early Entrance to Kindergarten or First Grade

  • The staff of North Thurston Public Schools is pleased to work with you as you consider the very important decision of whether to have your student assessed to enter kindergarten or first grade early. Early, as per Washington State Law, means that the child’s birthday falls after the state established guideline of age 5 by August 31 for kindergarten and age 6 by August 31 for first grade.

In order to be eligible to be assessed for early entrance, children must live within the North Thurston School District boundaries and:

    • For Kindergarten: Children must turn age 5 between September 1 and October 31; or

    • For First Grade: Children must turn age 6 between September 1 and October 31 PLUS successfully completed 450 hours in an accredited kindergarten program.

NOTE: Children born November 1 and after are NOT eligible for assessment. No exceptions per NTPS District Policy 3110.  Also please note any changes made to NTPS District Policy 3110 prior to the June 30 deadline will apply to all applicants regardless of when the application was submitted.
