My name is Christina Vernon and I am your child’s social studies teacher for this upcoming school year. This school year marks my 4th year of teaching and my second one here at Nisqually. Prior to being a Totem, I taught 6th grade humanities in Lakewood, WA at Lochburn Middle School for two years and graduated with my Masters degree in Teaching from the Evergreen State College. I am especially excited this year to be teaching social studies as I earned a double bachelors degree in both history and social studies from Western Washington University- it's my favorite subject!!.
Teaching is a passion of mine but is just one of many experiences I have had working with youth, especially middle school age children. I spent time working as a special education paraeducator for three years in the Olympia school district. Outside the classroom, I have also worked as a summer camp director and before/after school child care coordinator for the South Sound YMCA. I also love SPORTS!!!! I have coached and officiated several youth soccer and basketball teams. I also still play! I play on an adult coed soccer team with my husband and friends. I also play on a basketball team with my dad and brothers every summer at HOOPFEST in Spokane.
Outside of the classroom, you'll find me spending time, adventuring about with my family. :)
I bring all these experiences and more to the classroom as they have helped me cultivate my teaching practice and philosophy. My focus as an educator is to create a learning environment that is hands on, interactive and connected to your child’s life. I encourage students to ask questions, share, collaborate and make real life applications between the content and their own surroundings and community.
Thank you and here is to a wonderful, successful year!
