I began teaching in 2004 and have loved teaching 2nd Grade. This is my 5th year at Lacey Elementary where I have taught 2nd and Kindergarten. I started in Jacksonville, Florida and My husband and I moved here two years ago to Washington to be closer to my grandchildren. I have three children. My oldest is my daughter who has lived here for the past 10 years. Then I have two sons, both of whom live here in Lacey/Olympia area. I also have just recently acquired a Biro Yorkie Puppy, so I feel like a new mom!
I teach using many different tactics in order to reach all modalities of learners. I love to engage the students using music and art. Second graders are inquisitive and ready to learn. Learning occurs when students feel welcomed and safe in a classroom. Presenting new ideas while acknowledging a growth mindset allowoing mistakes to be tools and teaching about mindfulness with creativity brings froth a student's desire to learn. The following site describes a sample of 2nd Grade expectations for learning this year:
Scholastic - 2nd Grade Learning
My goal is to create a warm, open environment where students feel safe enough to ask questions, explore and seek answers. I challenge every student to surpass his or her own personal best and help them over the hills and through the valleys of these growing years. I teach the student that their grades are a reflection of where they are now. Along with core subjects, I teach them empathy, care, forgiveness, goals, and problem solving. We celebrate our differences and connect through experiences that teach us how to respect one another.
