  • Welcome to Third Grade!

I am excited to welcome your student to our Third Grade classroom!  It will be a wonderful school year!  Your student will continue to learn in all areas including:
Math, Literacy: Reading and Writing, Science (with occasional STEM actitvities), Social Studies, as well as introducing SEL in the mornings with a brief Morning Meeting, and a wrap-up/reflection at the end of the class day.  Students also attend Specialist time weekly with our wonderful Specialists who focus on Music, Art, PE, and Library.  Please contact me if you have any questions throughout the school year.  I will also send home a regular class letter to keep you updated on areas of learning and upcoming events.

What is STEM?  What is SEL?

Each acronym represents subjects and skills that are valuable for the whole child:
    • STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math
    • SEL - Social-Emotional Learning

In the NTPS we are focusing on SEL with all grade levels by thinking about the whole child.  Students learn about their thoughts and feelings and how they affect their actions: what they do and what they say.  Students learn to recognize that all feelings are part of who they are.  Our goal at school is to recognize when our feelings are not in the "Green" or "Good to Go" Zone (Zones of Regulation), and learning and practicing how to get back to: "calm, focused, and ready to learn."  Learning empathy (understanding how another person is feeling) and resilience (how to withstand adversity and continue forward) to develop lifelong skills that serve them into adulthood.

We will do occasional STEM activities that relate to other class learning that may include working with manipulatives, using Chrome book laptop computers to do online math or exploring hands on engineering activities and introduction to coding software as time allows.

At Chambers Prairie we have an all-school creed encouraging students to work hard, treat others with kindness and respect, learn from mistakes and not give up on themselves.  Student are helped to feel that they are a part of a school "family" where they are loved, encouraged, and that they can contribute to the school community as well.  Chambers Prairie is a place your child will learn and grow!

    My Teaching background

I have been an educator since 2002.  I graduated from Rockmont College (now CCU) in Denver, CO with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with an emphasis in Social Sciences.  After returning to the Pacific Northwest and my children were both in school I went back to college to pursue a teaching certificate and graduated from PLU with a Masters Degree in Education with endorsements in Elem. Ed., History, and Social Studies.  I have taught in several classrooms as well as substitute taught in public school districts and private schools in Pierce, Thurston, and Mason counties, from preschool to high school.  I completed the proTeach online course while teaching full-time to earn my Professional Teacher certificate; a rigorous program reflecting on my teaching practices, which meets Washington State's advanced teaching certificate standards.  I taught as a STEM/SEL Specialist at Chambers and Horizons in the past few years, and I am thrilled to be teaching 3rd Grade here at Chambers Prairie Elementary this year!

    A little more about me

My children have attended schools in the district and graduated from Timberline High School.  Both my daughter and son are also college graduates and both are recently married and starting their families.  My husband and I attended many music, sports, theater, and academic events throughout their school years and still attend events of friends we know who have children attending North Thurston schools.  It amazes me how many talented young people are attending our district schools!

I was also raised in a military family and know how our military families have many adjustments to make as they move frequently over the course of a parent's military career.  I have lived in several states in the U.S. including Kentucky, Texas, Hawaii, several locations in Washington, overseas in Germany, and attended colleges in Colorado and Washington.  I love to travel and have also been to several eastern and western states, and visited parts of Mexico, Canada, London, England and Paris, France.  I have seen many beautiful places, but the beauty and diversity of the Pacific Northwest with the mountains, ocean, Palouse desert, and waterways of Puget Sound is hard to beat!  We live in a wonderful part of the world!

Thank you for sharing your child with me as your child's teacher, and with all of us here at Chambers Prairie during the school day! We are glad you are part of our Chambers Prairie family!
