Letter from Principal Owen
I’d like to extend to our community a very warm welcome to you and your family. I am honored to serve as a principal in North Thurston Public Schools and especially at Salish Middle School, the newest of our middle schools. It is truly a privilege for me to work with our students, staff and families to create a positive and supportive culture here at Salish. At the very core of our beliefs is the importance of building relationships with each other and developing a strong sense of community where everyone belongs. We pride ourselves in the diversity within our school community, where every student is treated with kindness and respect and supported in a way that serves them best.
This year we will continue to work with our student community to grow opportunities for all of us to learn and share our cultures and differences with one another. Our students have suggested special events to explore and understand the unique distinctions amongst us and to celebrate with our special foods and traditions. We are also proud to serve numerous military families here at Salish. We provide opportunities for students to be supported and to get to know one another through clubs, small groups, advisory and student activities. We are fortunate to have a behavioral military and family life counselor on our campus providing even greater supports for our students with active duty family members.
We will continue many of our schoolwide traditions where we spotlight our students for their achievement, their improvement and their character. One of these special events occurs quarterly and is known as the Raven’s Recognition Breakfast. This is an opportunity for students and their families to be acknowledged by an individual staff member for their accomplishments and contributions to our school community. In addition, we find numerous ways to “catch” our students doing the right thing on any given day. There are donut parties for classes with high attendance and students being to class on time, treats during lunch for students who complete their summer reading and surprise pop up parties celebrating a host of good deeds. We are always seeking new ways to connect and let our students know how much we appreciate and care for them.
I hope that you will feel welcome and will participate in the Salish school community this year. We appreciate your involvement during conferences, at activities and each and every day with your student. We will continue to strive toward even greater communication and collaboration with each of you and welcome your thoughts and ideas to better serve our students and families. I hope you’ll consider attending our Family Advisory Board meetings where all family members are invited and have the opportunity to meet together each month. I greatly value talking with you and listening to your feedback, questions and insights. I also love sharing the amazing things happening here at Salish with all of you. I look forward to partnering with each of you in your child’s education.
Karen Owen, Principal
