    Dear Kinderparents,

Monday will mark one week since your child has been in school.  I miss the Kinderfriends!  We have entered a time, where everyone has the power to help with fighting the corona outbreak.  Currently, you can help by social distancing and remembering to not expose yourself and family. Right now, staying at home and distancing is the right thing to do.

Please let your Kinderfriend know that Sean and Dawn somehow got into my car and have taken up residence in my home.  A few days ago, I woke up to noise in my kitchen... I think they were trying to make me breakfast, but scattered when I turned on the lights.  They have plenty of food and have, no doubt  been exploring my home while I am asleep!  I will keep you posted as to their activities.

Teachers are waiting to hear how best to address the education of our students.  In the meantime, I know how resourceful my Kinderparents are.  :)  There are still many resources on my website (all past PTP's, etc.) and I know that you will explore the internet.  As I receive guidance, I will communicate via my website.  Read every day and I would also encourage journaling.  I will let you know as soon as I find out our next steps in your child's education.  As you have no doubt heard, conferences have been cancelled.

    Best wishes and side-hugs!
    Be safe and take care,
    :)
    Mr. T.

    Dear Kinderparents,

I have uploaded next week's PTP on the website for you.

Parent-Teacher conferences are coming at the end of the month.  We will dismiss at 11:10 all that week.  We will be having "snunch" that week.  I will send home a school lunch order form for the week.  Students can bring their own lunch or have a snack here at school prior to dismissal and eat lunch at home.  :)
If you have not scheduled your conference online, please do so as spots fill up quickly.

    Stay well!
    :)  Mr. T.

    Dear Kinderparents,

We are working on making a "sandwich" when writing.... the slices of bread are the beginning sentence (introductory sentence) and ending sentence (conclusion/wrap up sentence.)  The middle of the sentence consists of 3 support sentences. Please make sure that you are helping your child with their self assessment at the end of their writing.  You will note a new "sandwich" icon.... they can circle the thumbs up if they remembered all five sentences.  Some students are writing more than 3 supports and that is great!  (It makes for a more delicious sandwich!)

With all the illness lately, we have been working on washing our hands for at least 20 seconds by singing the ABC song when washing.  We are also doing boot bumps and "air high fives and fist bumps."

Parent-Teacher conferences are coming at the end of the month.  You will receive an email about signing up for conferences.  We will dismiss at 11:10 all that week.  We will be having "snunch" that week.  I will send home a school lunch order form for the week.  Students can bring their own lunch or have a snack here at school prior to dismissal and eat lunch at home.  :)

    Dear Kinderparents,

We are currently in 3rd place in Kindergarten for minutes read.  Thank you to all parents who are participating.  This week on Friday, February 21, students may wear pajamas and bring a favorite book to read.  We will be reading in the morning.  :)

We will start Japanese centers this week.  The Kinderfriends have been learning about what it is like to live in Japan.

Report cards and easyCBM results came home on the 14th.  Email me if you have any questions.

Thanks again for your support in your child's learning.  I can see the impact with students who are doing the PTP!

    Dear Kinderparents,

Wild About Reading continues.  Please make sure that you are filling out the minutes on their reading log and sending them back to me weekly.

Konnichiwa - You might have heard from your child that our theme has changed.  We are now studying the Japanese culture and our centers will be thematic in nature.

Report cards will be coming home soon.

Valentine's party is Friday at 2:00.  If you would like to bring treats, that is fine.  Valentines are optional.  Please do not have your child put student names on them as it can take an entire morning for the class to get them in the correct student decorated sack.  We will decorate sacks for the Valentines, so please do not bring a decorated box or bag for your child.  Also make sure that your child has their Valentines with them in the morning as that is when we will distribute them.  We have 14 girls and 9 boys in the classroom.

    Dear Kinderparents,

End of semester testing continues.  I have been sending informational assessment results home with your child to help you  understand specifically their academic levels and what areas could use some extra practice.

January 31st is Crazy Hair or Crazy Hat day.  It is a school-wide reward for good behavior/number of Eagle Feathers.  Your child can wear crazy hair or a crazy (yet appropriate) for the half day on Friday.

February is "Wild About Reading Month" at Horizons.  The students will have an assembly on January 31.  I will share information about Wild About Reading as soon as it becomes available.

Valentines Day:  We will have a Valentines Party at 2:00 on Friday, February 14.  Feel free to bring goodies.  Please come to the classroom at 1:50 to help set up.   Students may bring valentines in the morning to exchange if they choose.  We will be decorating Valentines bags for the Kinderfriends.  If you wish to exchange Valentines, please only have your child sign their name.... do not put student names on the Valentines.  In the past, it has taken up to 2 hours for all students to put the correct Valentine to the correct student when students write individual student names.  We are going to streamline this year!  Currently we have 23 students.  I would bring an extra Valentine just in case.  :)

    Dear Kinderparents,

Happy New Year!  Welcome back to school.  I hope that your Winter Break was a good one!

We are prepping for Winter EasyCBM assessments happening in the middle of January.  EasyCBM assessments are timed assessments, so it is important to see how fast your child can demonstrate their letter sounds as well as break down words.  You can help by having your child work on their speed in these areas.  Our goal was to have all 26 letter names and sounds mastered by Winter Break, so flashcard work is also important for those who still have letters to master.

    PTP/Homework has begun again.

    Dear Kinderparents,

We did not get a lot more participation for bringing in graham crackers and candy for the gingerbread decorating, but I will still have the event.  I think we will have enough graham crackers.  So far I only have 2 volunteers to help me build the houses on Thursday.  (Please note that I had earlier typed Wednesday by mistake!) If you can help, that would be appreciated.  If you are volunteering and have a glue gun, please bring one with you.

    Thanks!
    :)  Mr. T.

"We are punctual eagles"-- We began a on-time program 2 weeks ago.  For every day that the Kinderfriends are on time (no tardies), we get to color a letter in the phrase "We are punctual eagles.  When we get all letters colored, Mr. Kraft has a prize for us.  So far we have had many tardies and have only colored in "We are."

    November 12, 2019

    Dear Kinderparents,

We have begun Space Centers.  If  you go on the internet, your chlid may enjoy seeing videos of the international space station, mars exploration, the solar system, astronaut training, etc.  A trip to the library would also be a great place for your child to learn about space and space exploration.

We have been working hard on both "breaking down" and reading our "green words" that follow the rules as well as working on "red words" that can not be broken down.  As you work with your child and they see a "red word," please ask them to "stop and think" and then "say, spell, say" as they read the word.

Our goal is mastery of all letter names and sounds by Winter Break.  Many students have made that goal!  Keep up the great learning!

We are getting to that time of year where weather can be tricky.  Here are some tips about inclement weather!

    Inclement weather:

If there is snow on the ground in the morning, or the roads seem dangerously icy, school may start 2 hours late or be cancelled. Those decisions will be made and available to the public by 6:00 a.m.  Activate your School Messenger account with your email address to check and adjust your communication settings!

If no announcements are made, then our schools are operating normally.

    The information can be found:

Please remember that road conditions vary in different parts of Thurston County, and that neighboring school districts make their own decisions about whether to run their schools late or cancel school.

    What is a two-hour delay?

    • School starts two hours later than the normal start time and dismisses at the normal time. For example, high school would start at 9:30, middle school would start at 11:20, and elementary would start at 10:10, 10:15, 10:25, 10:40 or 10:50.
    • When there is a 2-hour delay, there will be no transportation for New Market Skills Center, no transportation for Preschool (and no Preschool classes) and no out of district transportation.
    • If we have to run 2 hours late on an early release day, all school schedules revert to normal school-day schedules.
    • When school is canceled, most after-school activities, such as athletics, are canceled as well. This decision is determined by district administration.

    Hope this information helps!
    Stay dry and warm!
    :)  Mr. T.

    Dear Kinderparents,

Thank you for coming to parent-teacher conferences last week!  It was great to sit down and talk with you and set goals for your child. Thank you to all parents who are following the PTP and supporting  your child in their learning!  Your participation makes an incredible impact!

Now that WAKids is over, we are full steam ahead in our learning.  You may have heard from your child that the classroom has changed.  We have started our first thematic unit which is studying space.  Centertime will be thematically based now.  I am excited to see the Kinderfriends emerse themselves in our thematic unit.

The weather is turning cold.  Please make sure that your child has proper coats for this change.

Please return all library books, so that your child is able to check out a new one.

    October 28, 2019

    Dear Kinderparents,

Welcome to conference week.  I look forward to meeting with you this week!  Please come on time, as your conference will end at the appointed time, regardless of the time it started, otherwise conferences will domino and we will never maintain the schedule. :)  You will be seated in the pod near the cubbies and I will call you in to conference with me.

This week is a very different week for the Kinders.   We release at 11:10, the schedule is very different because of that and we have "snunch" which was outlined last week when you receive the lunch order.  All students who did not order school lunch or bring a lunch/snack will receive one prior to dismissal.  :)

Please note that Halloween falls on a school day, but Horizons students do not wear Halloween costumes to school on October 31.

So far this year, we have concentrated on the letters: m, s, t, p, c, a, h, n, r,  i, f, g, b and o.  This week will be:  l and d.  Our goal is mastery of all letter names and sounds by Winter Break.  If your child is falling behind in their mastery, extra practice may be needed to catch them up.

Time to bring back library books, so that your child can check out a new one when we have library as a specialist.

Friday is "Eagle Up Day."  Your child will be able to rotate through 2 classes and do activities in our pod.  This is a positive behavior reward that is done quarterly.

Auditory segmenting continues.  Please continue to practice segmenting with 3-phoneme words.

    October 21, 2019

    Dear Kinderparents,

WAKids assessments are completed!  Tuesday, the school lunch menu has changed for this day and is NOT Cheese Quesadillas but rather aCorndog or Veggie Burger

Please note that Halloween falls on a school day, but Horizons students do not wear Halloween costumes to school on October 31.  Horizons PTSA is sponsoring a "Trunk of Treat" on Thursday, October 24th and your child can wear their Halloween costume to that event.  :)

Please make sure that you sign up for your school conferences.  They are scheduled online.  Dismissal is at 11:10 during conference week.

During conference week, because students are dismissed at 11:10, which is the time when Kinderfriends typically eat lunch at school.  Many students go to Y-care or daycare and need to eat a lunch prior to student release from school.  I will schedule a “Snunchtime” (snack-lunch) during the school day, so students have an opportunity to eat.  If your child brings a snack or lunch in their lunchboxes, that is great.  If they do not, snacks from my snack station will be provided.  If you would like your child to order a lunch, return this slip that I am sending home with your child to me, so I can ensure that your child gets a sack lunch provided by the school during conference week.

So far this year, we have concentrated on the letters: m, s, t, p, c, a, h, n, r,  i, f and g.  This week will be:  b and o.  Our goal is mastery of all letter names and sounds by Winter Break.  If your child is falling behind in their mastery, extra practice may be needed to catch them up.

Segmenting:  We have been working on segmenting words (breaking it down) into their individual sounds.  This is an auditory exercise done just verbally.  This is a separate exercise than decoding, which is done while looking at the word.  Success in segmenting is a major indicator of success in reading, so this auditory skill is important to practice.  We are concentrating on 3-phoneme (words with three sounds) at the moment.

Social Emotional Learning:  The focus is on bullying.

The Kinderfriends will be checking out books to take home from the Horizons library.  I would like them to be kept at home for approximately a week.  That way we can return the books back into the system and your child will be able to check out another book when their library specialist time comes again.

    Dear Kinderparents,

The Parent-Teacher Partnership (Homework) begins this week.  Please go to the PTP section of my website and click on PTP 01.  Remember to keep the first page as your guide and return all other pages on October 14.  This is the most important things you can do to help your child with their academic foundations this  year.  Should you have any questions or concerns about the PTP, please let me know.

We have begun journaling.  Thank you for your spiral donations.

By now every child received their free Eagles shirt.  We wear them on Wednesdays which is our spirit day.  I am looking forward to seeing a classroom full of eagles on the 9th!  :)

There is no school on Friday as teachers will be in classes all day.

The weather has definitely changed to fall, please make sure that your child has a coat to wear as it is getting rather chilly!

WAKids assessments are winding down.  We have begun with our writing.  We are concentrating on labeling pictures and writing sounds we hear.  Remember that writing can look many, many different ways right now.  :)  Your job is to be encouraging your child to write the sounds they hear and not spelling words for them.  Ask your child to read the writing that comes home.  You want them to track their "writing" with their fingers and tell you what they "wrote."

So far this year, we have concentrated on the letters: m, s, t, p, c, a, h, and n.  This week will be:  r and i.

We are settling into our routines.  Our social emotional learning is going well.  The Kinderfriends are working on their focus and listening!

Please have your child bring a coat to school and please write your child's name inside.  The Kinderfriends tend to leave their coats at recess and lunch and they end up in the lost and found.

WE NEED SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS:  I am still short about 12 spiral notebooks before we can begin journaling.  Please have your child bring in their spirals, please.  Donations would be appreciated!  The spirals should just be plain cover (any color)  college or narrow ruled.  :)

We are adding n and h this week!  Your child's free Horizon's shirts should be coming shortly.  I will send them home as soon as they arrive.

    Dear Kinderparents,

The Kinderfriends had a pretty good day today.  We have a few Kinderfriends who are learning how to listen, follow directions and make appropriate behavior choices... we will continue to work in those areas.  :)

Your child's backpack now contains their backpack folder.  This folder should live in  your child's backpack.  The pink side is for things coming home, the green side is for things coming to Mr. T.

Thanks for all the cheers coming into the school today!  It was great to see that support!  Thanks to all that have completed their "headline" project.  Those selfies were on the wall as your child walked into the pod.

I just found out that school portrait day is Wednesday, September 25.  Information will be coming home in backpacks as soon as I get it.  Just mark it on your calendars.

Please turn in those PTSA T-shirt order forms, so we can order your child's free Horizons t-shirt for spirit day!

    September 5, 2019

    Dear Kinderparents,

We are fortunate to have an awesome PTSA that does SO much for our students.  Two things....

First, Please join the PTSA and be an active member.  Espi and Wayne do so much for us and they could use the support.

Second,  As a welcome to Horizons, PTSA generously gives each student their own Horizons Elementary Eagle Shirt to wear on spirit day, which is typically Wednesday.  You will be receiving a green half sheet order form for your Kindergarteners shirt.  PLEASE, complete it and send it back with your child by Wednesday.  PTSA needs to make the order and then it will take approximately 2 weeks to get your childs shirt.

I am also looking forward to seeing your headlines coming in!

    Thanks!
    :) Mr. T.

    Dear Kinderparents,

Just a quick note to welcome you to a wonderful new year!  I am excited to learn more about you and your child as we journey through your child's first year at Horizons Elementary.  Because of WAKids requirements, your Kindergartener will not be starting school when the rest of students at Horizons do.  I will be meeting individually with families on the first 3 days of school.  You will be notified of your appointment.  Kindergarteners will join the normal school schedule with the rest of the Horizons students on the Monday after school begins.  It is important that you let your child know this, so they are not disappointed when siblings or neighbor children start on the first day of school!

This fall, I will be mentoring student teacher, Mr. Perez.  Please welcome him to the classroom as well!  You will no doubt see him working with the Kinderfriends!

    A few items of importance:

OPEN HOUSE:  Open house is the perfect time to bring your child's school supplies!  Please look at the list closely and bring the supplies that are listed.

SNACK TIME:  We will have snack time in the afternoon each day.  I will send a notice home when it is your turn to bring snack.  I ask that parents bring snacks for the entire class for the week.  The snack notice will tell you all about it.  Depending on class size, you will most likely have to bring snacks only 3-4 times a year.

COLD LUNCHES:  Please write your child's name on their lunch box, so we can ensure that they come back to you.  There are a lot of students going through the gym and eating each day.  :)

BACKPACK FOLDER:  Make sure that it is in your child's backpack every day.  :)

BEACH TOWEL:  Please bring a beach towel (labeled with your child's name) for rest and recharge time.

BE ON TIME, PLEASE:  I have many routines that the Kinderfriends do as soon as the bell rings.  This includes lunch orders and attendance which needs to be entered into the computer system, prganizing cold lunches, collection of notes, passing out important papers, explaining the first assignment of the day, etc.  When your child is tardy, not only does it stress your child, but it disrupts the routines of the students and your child misses out on instruction.   It also conveys the message that their education is not important enough to be on time.  If you find time management challenging, please let me know.  I would be happy to help you solve this problem.

LABEL YOUR CHILD'S COATS, GLOVES AND HATS:  The phonemenon of "not mine" happens in Kindergarten.  I can show an article of clothing to the entire class that was dropped inside the classroom and somehow, it miraculously does not belong to anyone!  :)  This will eliminate that issue and it will be helpful for things that might accidently be left at the playground.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS:  From time to time, I need parent volunteers to help with projects and chaperone Field Trips.  Must complete a background check and registration.  If you are interested in helping the Kinderfriends, please see Kim in the office ASAP to register as registration may take time to be completed and entered into the computer system.

Please check my website "announcments page" at least weekly as this is my main method for communication with my Kinderfamilies I typically update announcements on Mondays, but if I receive information from the principal or district that I need to inform you of, I will add it as I receive it.  (I just add to my announcements, so if you forget to go to my website, just scroll down... the information will be there!

Again, welcome!  I look forward to a wonderful school year!

    :)  Mr. T.
