Professional Biography

  • My story isn't the typical one you often hear about teachers. It isn't the, 'I always knew I was going to be a teacher' story. The story wherein childhood imagination turned child into 'teacher' while stuffed animals or obliging friends played obedient students. While I always loved being around children, I actually didn't even consider teaching until a spirited third grader planted the seed in my mind.

I was working in a home daycare and found that I really enjoyed the older children who joined us after school.  One day, a boy named Connor, who was working on a homework assignment that had been particularly difficult for him, said to me, "You always explain things so I get it! You should be a teacher!" The seed grew quickly over the next few weeks, and I enrolled in an 'Introduction to Education' course. The rest, as they say, is history.

I attended Western Washington University, where I majored in both Psychology and Elementary Education. During my twenty-plus years in the classroom, I've taught grades 2-6.  I have a Masters Degree in Library Media.  As a teacher-librarian, I was able to work with students of all ages, from Kindergarten through sixth grade. There is really nothing more enjoyable to me than sharing a great book. Watching twenty-five little faces light up when they hear a great story? Well, that is truly a magical experience!

For many years, I've also volunteered as a Drama Club director.  I love working with students in a creative way.  We used favorite children's literature and bring stories to life through theater. This experience holds wonderful memories for me!

Outside of my work, I also enjoy reading, cooking, travel, scuba diving, and snorkeling. I especially love the beach and each Summer spend 4-6 weeks traveling to 'beachy' locations.

I'm so happy to be teaching fourth grade! I look forward to another great year teaching my favorite grade level!
