Military deployment Lunch groups are a fun opportunity for students to hang out with friends and receive support in a small group setting.
Lunch groups begin mid October and go through the entire school year. Groups are formed by grade level- 1st – 6th grade and usually have 5 to 12 students in each group. These groups give children the opportunity to check in with Ms. Stacy, the behavior specialist, on a weekly basis. Some topics of the group will include identifying feelings and thoughts, who to go to for help, what to do if you’re feeling down, etc.
A fun project this year was the video project. Having a deployed parent is difficult. It is also difficult for that parent to be away for an extended period of time. We had an idea that would help both parent and child. We videotaped a child reading a special book and afterwards the child was able to add a personal message. The video was given to the family which could then be sent to the deployed parent. There were many heart-felt moments made!
This year we were able to recognize our military families by taking our first field trip to Rainier Vista Park, where families were able to have a picnic and play.
At the end of the school year, Ms. Stacy treat’s her lunch groups to a root beer float party- just to say “thank you kids for being so strong!”
All in all, Military lunch groups are a great way for kids to feel supported!!!!
Thank you for sharing your children with me. They are ALL very special and strong kids!
