Melinda Atkinson

Professional Biography

  • My name is Mindy Atkinson and I have been teaching at Woodland Elementary for the North Thurston school district since 2008. I teach children in the first through fourth grades in a self-contained, Special Education setting. Having received my degree from Saint Martin's University with teaching endorsements in Special Education, History and Social Studies, I look forward every year to teaching students with special needs.

In addition to being a teacher, I most enjoy spending time with my family. We love "hanging out" outside, working with our animals (there are many!), cooking and (continually!) remodeling our home.

Thank you for sharing your children with us. Woodland is a great place to learn and grow!

  • We work on academics (reading, writing and math) daily, in addition to individual IEP goals. Functional, adaptive, social, behavior and life skills learning are a focus of ours as well, as these are the building blocks we all need to lead a rich and meaningful life.

Fridays are usually our days for heading out and working on our functional, academic, social, adaptive and behavior skills within the community. These are our Community Learning days, commonly referred to as Field Trips by the students! The children learn how to use the city bus system, how to behave appropriately in a variety of settings, use money, interact with others...the list goes on. These are favorite days for both the students and staff to put our learning into practice! These trips are incredibly rewarding to our students as they use their new knowledge in a real, meaningful way.
