2022 Varsity Letter Awards

2022 Varsity Letter Awards

Congratulations to our 2022 Varsity Letter in Community Service award recipients, Sakari Schlehlein of North Thurston and Rameza Ujan of Timberline! Despite the many pandemic challenges, both students were able to volunteer more than 350 hours to qualify for the award. Sakari and Rameza are wonderful examples of how youth can positively impact their community.

Sakari with her award and family

Sakari Schlehlein (NTHS)

Sakari has been a dedicated volunteer for the Steilacoom Indian Tribe, serving over 360 hours since 2019. She has helped with the National Spirit Run, community salmon distribution, hosting the WA State Fair booth for Native Days, working full docent days at the Tribal Center, and tending to the garden and trees on center grounds. Steilacoom Tribal Chair Danny Marshall said, “Sakari is considered a volunteer hero for the Steilacoom Indian Tribe.” Reflecting on her volunteer service, Sakari said the most rewarding part has been “learning the history and meeting the townspeople” during her work at the center. Sakari plans to attend The Evergreen State College.

Rameza in the THS library with staff

Rameza Ujan (THS)

Rameza has volunteered nearly 370 hours with NTPS at Lakes Elementary and Timberline High School since 2019. Most of Rameza’s service hours were in the library, helping students and staff members check out materials and resolve Chromebook issues. Timberline Teacher-Librarian Katie Myrick said, “Rameza is a valued member of the THS library team.” According to Rameza, the most valuable part of her volunteer service has been learning new things, especially technology and time management, which will be helpful for her future.
