Science Program Services
Mary Fluke manages the science warehouse. This program provides science kits to grades K through 8, focusing primarily on kindergarten through fifth grade. Each grade level receives three kits per year to cover three basic science strands: physical, earth and life.
Science Kit Schedule
Science kits are distributed to the buildings on a schedule designed so that a kit spends a minimum of eight weeks in classrooms. In the 2017-2018 school year we will use a synchronous rotation schedule in grade levels 3-5 , so that every class in a given school and grade level is studying the same strand of science at the same time. In grade levels K-2, teachers teach the same topics at the same time across the district.
Science kit distribution and pickup for school buildings is facilitated by Mary Fluke. Classroom teachers inventory supplies before returning kits to Mary, noting what needs replenishment. Science kits are staged (prepared for delivery) by school building, science strand, and kit title. Kits are delivered and picked up by our warehouse delivery people to each individual building. Science kits weigh from 20 to 40 pounds each.
Live Organism Delivery
Living organisms are used to enhance some of our Life Science kits. They are not housed at our district warehouse so must be ordered from science supply companies. Planning for ample time for organism delivery is important in the Life Science kits that use critters. Please work with Mary or Heather around your questions about ordering living organisms.
Science materials come from a variety of sources including Delta Education, Carolina Biological, Niles Biological, KCDA Purchasing Cooperative, Nasco, and Sunshine Mealworms. Local Vendors include PetSmart, Fred Meyer, and Rite Aid or Walgreens.
