Mr. Bailey is in his 14th year of teaching. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington and later completed his teaching certificate from Pacific Oaks College Northwest. He began his teaching career in Highline Public Schools where he taught kindergartners in an English as a Second Language (ESL) program. In his ninth year with North Thurston Public Schools, Mr. Bailey enjoys sharing the reasons why ESL is so important.
ESL programs allow students who speak a language other than English at home to explore academic content in schools through the use of visual aids, gestures, and simplified English. We provide “wait time” so students can formulate their responses and have an opportunity to express themselves in English. We tailor the instruction to meet the students’ language needs by using the proficiency standards. One challenge is helping students learn new language to access to academic content which is distinct from their social language. We help students improve their English across the language domains: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
