Professional Biography

  • Welcome to my webpage for English Language Learners (ELL) and the ESL Program at Lydia Hawk Elementary School! My name is Ms. Brownfield. I love teaching language and have been a teacher of other languages to students for many years. I received my Bachelor of Arts in French Education from the University of Illinois and my Masters in Linguistics and the teaching of English as a Second Language from Ohio University. In addition to having taught French for 20 years in Tacoma, I have taught English as a Second Language as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco and to students from all around the world in Ohio, Arkansas, Illinois, Kuwait, France and Washington State.

The English Language Learner (ELL) or English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is important because it provides support to students who are acquiring English as their second language and who are not yet completely proficient in all their language skills as measured by the ELPA 21 test. It provides ELLs with individualized and personalized instruction not otherwise available and allows English language learners to achieve grade-level or above proficiency in their language skills in order to succeed in their classes and beyond.
