Board Meeting Highlights from November 2, 2023

The NTPS School Board heard school improvement plan updates from principals representing our elementary, middle, and high schools. The plans focus on academic goals as well as social-emotional goals. (We post each school’s improvement plan on their website in fall and spring.)

Principals provided the Board with updates on a variety of school initiatives and issues, including:

  • Attendance: We continue to work on restoring attendance rates to pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels. Some strategies that schools are using include incentives, postcards home when students miss a certain number of days per month, and “donut be absent” school parties.
  • Reading: Particularly at the elementary level, we are focused on foundational reading skills so students may read to learn. In all subjects at all schools, educators continue to use data to analyze and collaborate so that we tailor teaching to individual student needs.
  • Social emotional learning provides a foundation for safe and positive learning environments. All NTPS schools embed SEL curriculum in their days. In addition, high schools have opened restorative centers this year, where trained students provide peer support with the help of an adult.
