Wild About Reading Horizons Elementary Read-A-Thon This month is the Horizons Wild About Reading PTSA Read-A-Thon. This event serves two very important purposes: First, as a whole school, we are focusing on encouraging all students to read. Our goal is not only that students read everyday, but that they love to read everyday. This month we have guest readers and other fun with books. One of our guest readers will be Mr. Gregoire! We will be celebrating Lacey Loves to Read, with a focus on American Indian author Joseph Bruchac. The second important purpose of our Wild About Reading month is fundraising. Our PTSA is hosting a Read-A-Thon. Every last penny that is earned through the Read-A-Thon will go to the PTSA, and through them directly to serve our students at Horizons. The Read-A-Thon Tally Sheet Minutes will be collected each Friday in February to track the progress towards our school goal of 300,000 minutes. All Tally Sheets, and pledge money will be collected on Wednesday, March 3rd. You will find more information on the Horizons Elementary Newsletter. |
Please check out our Horizons Newsletter and our School Calendar for all of the latest activities and events.
CAN - Community Access Night at Horizons Elementary Horizons students, family members and the community are invited to use the Horizons library, have a snack, use the computers, check out books, read, do research, enjoy special programs like book making night, math night, game board night, special guests and much more. This is a free program provided by the North Thurston Public Schools. Community Access Nights are on the following Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. February 22nd, March 8th, March 22nd, and April 19th. We hope you will come and join us for these fun evenings. ART ROOM HAPPENINGS! During the week of April 12-16 the students, staff and parents of Horizons will have the unique ooportunity to work with a Washington Arts Commission Artist in Residentce, Diane Kurzyna. The whole school will be creating art out of discarded materials, but we need your help! We need: Clean plastic water bottles (16 oz size); Clean socks with no mate (white is fine, but colored socks are better); and Fabric scraps (about the size of a piece of paper). Please send these items to school with your student. More information about the project will follow. We are hoping you will want to join in the fun!

Principal's Coffee The next Principal's Coffee will be on Friday, February 19th from 8:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. in the Stage Area. This month at the Principal's Coffee, we will be talking about reading and how to help our kids grow as readers. If you have younger kids at home who are not yet in school, we will talk about starting them off as book lovers. I look forward to seeing you there! Mr. Fries |
